Call for Abstracts
JSMBE calls for papers for general sessions(GS) in the 57th Annual Conference. Presenters in symposiums(SY), panel discussions(PD) and organized sessions(OG) have been already reserved.
- December 15th 2017: JSMBE call for papers open, abstract submission begins
- January 20th 2018: abstract submission deadline
February 3rd 2018: abstract submission deadline

1. Applicant eligibility
Researchers in biomedical fields are eligible for the annual conference of JSMBE.
You are required to become a member if you are going to apply Young Investigator’s Award.
2. Abstract and Proceeding
You have two options to submit your paper as follows;
① submit an abstract and a proceeding.
② submit only an abstract.
JSMBE recommend ①“submit an abstract and a proceeding”. Both the abstract and the proceeding can upload in the on-line abstract entry system at the same time.
We are going to post your abstract and proceeding in the online JSMBE journal after the conference.
2.1 Abstract preparation
All applicants are required to submit an abstract in English.
Japanese abstract is an optional for Japanese presenters.
|English||Within 150 words or within 1200 characters.
Figures and tables are not acceptable.
|Japanese||Within 600 Japanese characters.|

2.2 Proceeding preparation
It is optional to submit a proceeding manuscript, but JSMBE recommends all applicants to submit one. However if you are concerned about multiple submissions, you may submit only an abstract.
Proceeding is up to three pages with A4 size document.

3. Instruction for abstract submission
3.1 Copyright transfer
JSMBE requires that authors/ copyright owners assign copyright to JSMBE in order to publish an abstract and a proceeding. The copyright transfer agreement has been done by checking the “Agreement copyright button” in the on-line abstract entry system.
* The copyright transfer agreement is required not only for the proceeding submission but also the abstract submission.
3.2 Conflict of Interest
JSMBE is providing the Guidelines Regarding Conflicts of Interest for the appropriate management of conflicts of interest (COI) resulting from involvement in collaborations between industry and academia.
Thus, anyone who plans to present at congresses or meetings of JSMBE is requested to disclose any COI with companies and associations related to the presentation/lecture scheduled at the abstract submission and at the presentation.
At abstract submission, if there is any COI to disclose in the first presenter and co-presenters, the first presenter need to check the corresponding mark and disclose the COI information in the online abstract entry system. Also the first presenter is required to disclose any COI at the presentation in the conference.
If there is no COI to disclose, the first presenter can check the “Nothing to disclose” button and doesn’t need to disclose at the presentation.
3.3 Human subjects and ethical considerations
JSMBE requires the certification that any research of the presentation has been approved by your Institutional Review Board on human research and on animal experiment.
If applicable, you are required to disclose whether the research received an approval from the presenter’s institutional ethics review board in the on-line abstract entry system.
4. Young Investigator’s Award
JSMBE awards the Young Investigator’s Award (YIA) for the young researchers who have achieved high-quality research with noteworthy and original finding in biomedical engineering fields.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the YIA:
The first presenter must be younger than 40 years old in a medical field, or younger than 35 years old in an engineering field.
The researchers in a medical field include persons who have medical license (e.g., doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, and clinical engineer, etc.) and/or who are engaged in medical/clinical/biological researches. The researchers in an engineering field include persons who engage in physics/chemistry/computer science/engineering researches, etc.
|2)||You must be a member or a student member of JSMBE as of 20th June 2018, the 57th JSMBE 2018.
* You can obtain membership of JSMBE at the registration desk of the 57th JSMBE 2018.
4.2 Instruction to apply for YIA
Applicants can easily complete the application for the YIA by;
Going to “Submission to General Session” in “Call for Paper” page in the 57th JSMBE and checking the box of “YIA submission”.

The application form includes the noteworthy, exploratory and original findings up to 200 words and the comments of your supervisor or signatures of co-presenters.

5. Abstract submission to general session
In the general session, the submitted papers are assigned in either the oral presentation or in the poster presentation regardless of their research quality and level.
First, the presenter chose the first and second choice of the research field according to the categories of the general session, and go to the on-line abstract entry system.

Instruction for Speakers
1. Conflict of Interest
Anyone who disclosed the COI in the on line abstract submission is required to discourse his/her COI again at the time of making presentations. You can download COI disclosure form from below.
The COI statement should be displayed on the first slide of your presentation for lectures in oral sessions or shown at the end of your poster for presentation in poster session.
Anyone who has no COI to disclose does not need to disclose at his/her presentation.
2. Instruction for Oral Speakers
Each presenter is given 7 minutes to present his/her slide show, and 3 minutes for discussion.
You can present either English or Japanese.
Each room is equipped with a Windows PC installed Power Point (2010/2013/2016).
If you use the secretariat’s PC
- Please prepare your data in Microsoft Power Point, and bring your file on a USB flash memory with you to the conference. And you will need to transfer your data to the session room Windows PC yourself.
- The Secretariat is responsible for destroying all copies of any data after the session.
If you bring your own PC
- The Secretariat will prepare a Mini D-sub 15 pin PC cable connector. If your PC is not compatible with this cable connector, please bring an adaptor to connect your PC to the Mini D-sub 15 pin PC cable connector.
- Please bring your AC adapter with you.
- Please also bring your presentation data on a USB flash memory as a backup file.
Please come to the “Data Preview” room having the same PC environment as the session rooms. We kindly ask all presenters to check in data at least 1 hour prior to your presentation.
3. Guidelines for Poster Presentations
- Poster presentations are a free style discussion.
- Presenters need to post his/her posters on the day of your presentation and his/her posters will be displayed from 9:30 - 17:00．Please post your poster by 9:30 on the day of and at the exhibition hall.
- Each presenter doesn’t have to stay with his/her poster all day. However, each presenter needs to stand by his/her poster during the scheduled discussion times.
The scheduled discussion times are 12:20 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 14:20.
All poster presenters are required to pre-order his/her lunch during pre-registration because the discussion time is scheduled during lunch time. Lunch will be 800 yen. No other lunch will be available to purchase during all 3-day of conference in the Sapporo Convention Center, and only pre-ordered lunch will be available.
Preparation of your poster
The poster should be a visual presentation of your submitted abstract. The poster should look visually appealing, easy to read and contain key information about your research.
- Poster panel size
H210cm × W90cm *see image on the right.
Poster numbers will be provided by the conference secretariat.
- At the top of the poster include the title of the presentation, the name of the authors and the affiliations.
- Removal of posters
Posters must be removed immediately after sessions at the end of each day.
The organizers take no responsibility for any posters that remain up after this time.
